The words “moral victory” were thrown around quite a bit after the Patriots’ Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. And while New England looked like the better team at times, it was unable to get it done at the end of the day.
There was plenty to like about the Patriots last week, but Matthew Judon isn’t calling the 25-20 loss to the 2022 NFC Champions a moral victory.
“Coming off the field, I told the team, ‘We don’t care about no moral victories,’” Judon said during former teammate and current NBC analyst Devin McCourty’s first sit down interview. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh, well, (the Patriots) looked like the better team.’ The better team won. The better team found a way to win. And that’s how it is every week.

“Everybody was talking about, ‘OK on paper. They look like they’re OK on paper, the division shouldn’t fall like that.’ Every year, it’s an on paper team that should win the Super Bowl that don’t win the Super Bowl,” he added. “And so from the outside world we don’t really care about what they be talking about. … Until the game strike zeros, nobody knows the outcome.
“So when we came off the field, (we said) ‘All right, don’t hang your head, but it wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t good enough to get to win.’ So whatever we got to do better next week in our prep preparation to get the win, to beat Miami, that’s what we got to do,” Judon concluded. “And so that’s what we’re doing. That’s what we building over here. And at the end of the year, the chips are gonna fall where they may.”
While the Patriots looked like the better team at times, they were unable to truly put the Eagles away and capitalize on several scoring chances. Now they go into a tough Week 2 matchup against an AFC rival in the Dolphins.

The Patriots will face a big test Sunday night without Jonathan Jones, who’s dealing with an ankle injury and won’t play against Miami. The cornerback has had success covering the speedy Tyreek Hill, but Jones’ absence will leave a void in trying to contain Hill. Kickoff from Gillette Stadium is set for 8:20 p.m. EST.
