The Red Sox claimed hard-throwing reliever Logan Gillaspie off waivers from the Orioles on Monday, then optioned him to Triple-A Worcester. Boston placed Jarren Duran (toe surgery) on the 60-day injured list to make room for Gillaspie on the 40-man roster.
The 26-year-old righty has a 4.10 ERA (26 ⅓ innings, 12 earned runs), 1.59 WHIP and .315 batting average against in 28 big league outings over parts of two seasons (2022-23).
He made his major league debut last season, posting a 3.12 ERA in 17 appearances (17 ⅓ innings) for Baltimore but opponents still hit .294 against him. He allowed six earned runs, 14 hits (two homers) and five walks while striking out eight in 11 outings (9 innings) for the O’s this season.

Gillaspie has a four-pitch mix. He throws a fastball, slider, changeup and curveball. His 84 four-seam fastballs this season have averaged 95.6 mph, per Baseball Savant. His 126 four-seam fastballs last year averaged 95.2 mph. Despite having good life on his fastball, big league opponents have gone 18-for-55 (.327) with two homers, six doubles and one triple against the pitch.
He has a 4.71 ERA in 34 relief outings (36 ⅓ innings) for Triple-A Norfolk this season. He has a 4.33 ERA in 131 career minor league outings (16 starts).
The Brewers initially signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He’s listed at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds.
Duran underwent a left big toe flexor tendon repair last Wednesday. Dr. Robert Anderson performed the procedure at the Charlotte Surgical Center in Charlotte. He’s expected to be ready for next spring training.
