Red Sox rival implodes in ninth inning, falls in Wild Card race

The Yankees looked primed to secure the win on Sunday against the Miami Marlins and keep pace with the Red Sox in the American League Wild Card race.

Then the ninth inning happened.

Leading 7-3 going into the ninth, the Marlins responded with a five-run inning off Clay Holmes to walk-off New York. Holmes entered the inning giving up just three runs over his last 35 games.

A Yuli Gurriel double was the beginning of the end for the Yankees before an infield single and a walk loaded the bases for Miami. Josh Bell hit the ball back to the mound and it looked as if it was going to be the game-ending double play. But Holmes couldn’t handle the comebacker and a wild throw to first allowed two runs to score.

Luis Arráez tripled to tie the game and end Holmes’ afternoon, but Tommy Kahnle didn’t have much luck either after walking the first batter he faced. Jake Burger ended the game with a single to complete the comeback.

The loss put the Yankees five games back of the final wild-card spot in the AL race. The Red Sox, after a win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, has them within three games.

Things have not been going the Yankees’ way of late, but they have a tough series ahead of them beginning Monday against the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves.
