As expected, the Celtics will see some coaching staff changes now that the season is over. After Ime Udoka was hired by the Rockets, there was a good chance he would hire away some Celtics assistant coaches he originally brought to Boston prior to last season.
That will indeed be the case — and more moves could be on the way. C’s assistant coaches Ben Sullivan, Mike Moser and Garrett Jackson are all leaving for Udoka’s staff in Houston, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. Aaron Miles and Jarrell Christian have also gotten some interest from other teams, Scotto reported.
With assistant coaches leaving Joe Mazzulla’s staff, the Celtics will need to make some hires over the offseason. Boston president Brad Stevens, talking at his end-of-season news conference, said the C’s will make at least one coaching staff hire. With the departures, the Celtics will need to fill out Mazzulla’s staff further. Stevens added they’ll look for an assistant coach with significant NBA experience.

“We’ll see how everything shakes itself out with what the staff looks like,” Stevens said. “But we’ll at least have one addition that we’ll make now that we have a summer to make it, and then we’ll go from there.”
The Celtics have seen significant change in their coaching ranks since the 2022 NBA Finals. Udoka’s dismissal has been well-documented, but it hasn’t just been him. Will Hardy left to coach the Jazz. Damon Stoudamire also left in the middle of the regular season to take the Georgia Tech job.
There were some questions about Mazzulla’s job status, especially after the C’s fell down 3-0 in the East Finals to the Heat. But Stevens confirmed the 34-year-old will be back next season. Now, it’s all about filling out the coaching staff around him as the C’s look to get back to the Finals next season.
