Worcester broke a 114-year-old record on Friday as abnormally high temperatures for February reached 56 degrees.

In its Friday forecast, the National Weather Service repeatedly noted that temperatures across New England could break past records. On Feb. 10, 1909, the high in Worcester hit 55 degrees.

Wind speeds hit 33 mph at around 9 a.m. in Worcester, with a chance to still reach as high as 41 mph, the weather service said. By the same time, humidity peaked at 71%. It’s a striking turnaround from the subzero temperatures New England experienced last Friday and Saturday, where Worcester’s low reached minus 13 degrees, according to the weather service.

“I’m not a mind reader but, people should be out enjoying it,” meteorologist Allan Dunham told MassLive after confirming Worcester’s record broke on Friday. “Everybody’s been saying today would be really warm.”

Other records broke Friday in Hartford, hitting 59 degrees, and Providence reached a high of 60, the weather service said. On the same day in 1909, Hartford was logged at 55 and Providence at 58. Boston is expected to break its Feb. 10, 1990, record Friday of 60 degrees, though it was still 54 degrees just before 10 a.m.

Forecasters anticipate a “springtime overachiever” with Friday’s potential for record-high temperatures. But with winds and low dewpoints, the weather service also issued a weather statement elevating the chances of fires across all of Connecticut and Rhode Island.
