Jorge Meeswee Calderon, 22-year-old Lawrence man, was identified as the bicyclist killed in a Jan. 5 Holyoke hit and run, Calderon’s family confirmed to MassLive.
On Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7:50 p.m., police responded to a report of a bicyclist struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection of Cabot and Canal streets. Once officers arrived on the scene, they found a male bicyclist — later identified as Calderon — on the ground injured from the crash.
After initiating immediate first aid, first responders rushed the bicyclist to a local Holyoke-area hospital for treatment. Calderon’s family and friends confirmed on Thursday, Jan. 12, that the 22-year-old died from the injuries he received during the crash.
A North Andover High School graduate, basketball player, aspiring musician and an up-and-coming barber at Style and Grace barber shop in Chicopee, Calderon’s loved ones said the man was a great soul who was always down for a good laugh.
Calderon’s family and friends launched a GoFundMe to help cover the funeral costs for the 22-year-old man. Anyone interested in donating to Jorge Calderon’s GoFundMe can do so here.
“I know it saddens many that such a great soul was taken so soon, but remember that his memory will last forever,” the GoFundMe states.
The vehicle in the collision fled the scene shortly after the crash occurred, police said. Anyone with information on the crash is urged to contact the Holyoke Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau at (413)-322-6900.
Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
