FOXBOROUGH — Devin McCourty and Matthew Slater have both been Patriots captains for over a decade. Both will almost certainly receive the honor for a 12th time before the new season starts.
But Jerod Mayo has seen the tandem grow as leaders in recent years.
Slater and McCourty are the only two players left on the roster that the linebackers coach played alongside, and Mayo said they’ve “absolutely” bridged a gap between his era and 2022.
“Those guys, they lead by example. They always have. I would say over the last few years though, they’ve both become very vocal,” Mayo said. “And that was because there was a lack of that voice. They’ve done a great job bridging that gap. I’m always excited to see when those guys really take charge.
“They’ve been through a lot. And they’re resourceful with younger guys. I think they’ve been great helping those guys along.”
Reading between the lines, Tom Brady’s voice is likely one that the locker room was lacking after he departed to Tampa Bay.
