The first episode of the series already hit the ground running and did not hold back with gore and intensity.

The prequel focuses on the peak reign of House Targaryen and the civil war, known as the “Dance of Dragons” which takes place about 200 years before Daenerys Targaryen fights for the throne. The new series will have 10 episodes all expected to be about an hour in length. New “House of the Dragon” episodes will be released on HBO’s cable channel and HBO Max every Sunday at 9 p.m. Here’s a sneak peek of what fans can experience in the newest episode:
For those who have never seen “Game of Thrones” it’s based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series “A Song of Ice and Fire.” Nine noble families play a deadly game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, to sit atop the Iron Throne.
For “Game of Thrones” fans who have seen the show we can expect this prequel to answer a lot of questions about the Targaryen dynasty and what came before “The Mad King” and then later on “The Mad Queen.” For viewers who watched the “Game of Thrones” series from the beginning, they had to wait a long time to see dragons but the good news is, this series is already filled with them.
In this series, the King is Viserys Targaryen, played by Paddy Conisdine. According to HBO, “he was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from Game of Thrones, good men do not necessarily make for great kings.” Another important character in this series is Viserys’ brother Prince Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith. His character leads on as villainous and eyeing for the throne.
In the premiere episode of “House of the Dragon” King Viserys has to name an heir in the event of his passing and after some drama with his brother Daemon, he decides to go another route. He names Rhaenyra, his daughter, the heir to the iron throne which already stirs drama within the Targaryen family. No woman has ever sat on the iron throne so this decision was bound to cause trouble for anyone in Westeros and from the looks of the trailer of the weeks ahead, the fight for power has already begun.
Here’s a look at some of the cast for the new series:
- Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen
- Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower
- Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen
- Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen
- Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon
- Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon
- Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower
- Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria
- Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole
HBO Max plans start at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year for ads or viewers can choose the no-ad option and pay $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year.
