Eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams advanced through an open qualifying tournament Friday to secure their spots in this weekend’s main draw of the AVP Tour Series Virginia Beach Open.
Among them were Virginia Beach natives Bryce Ernsberger and Brett Rosenmeier, who secured a spot in the main draw in just their second appearance in an AVP tournament. Ernsberger and Rosenmeier, seeded 10th, beat 23rd-seeded Jackson Herbert and Carson Strawbridge 21-13, 21-14 and then upset seventh-seeded Devin Decker and James Moyer 21-19, 21-19.
Ernsberger and Rosenmeier are scheduled to open play in the main draw as the 22nd seed Saturday morning against 11th-seeded Angel Dache and Brandon Joyner.
Fifth-seeded Kevin Knight, a Suffolk resident, and partner Josue Castillo also advanced to the main draw. Knight and Castillo won both their matches Friday, topping 37th-seeded Marc Fornaciari and Brian Gilmore 21-12, 21-16, and then upending 12th-seeded Nathaniel Miller and Garret Peterson 17-21, 21-17, 15-7.
Knight has played in four AVP qualifiers this season and advanced to two main draws. At the AVP Tour Series Waupaca (Wisconsin) Open in July, Knight teamed with Nolan Albrecht and won two main-draw matches, ultimately finishing ninth.
Castillo and Knight are scheduled to open play in the main draw Saturday as the 19th seed against 14th-seeded Bradley Connors and T.J. Jurko.
Top-seeded men Tim Brewster and Kyle Friend will play an opponent to be determined in the second round Saturday at 10:10 a.m., while Larissa Maestrini and Lili Maestrini, the top-seeded women, will play their opening match at the same time in the second round, also against an opponent to be determined.
Main draw play in the double-elimination tournament runs Saturday from approximately 8 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday from approximately 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Championship matches are scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. for the women and 4:30 for the men. Live coverage is available Saturday and Sunday from the Stadium Court on the AVP’s YouTube channel, @avpbeach.
